What's in a name?
An apology from the webaster to anyone who couldn't find this
site.
Back in the 'Good old Days' (Where the stayley website was written in notepad!)
I found an instant problem. The signs on the clubhouse had three different
spellings! This may not concern a cricketer as he's walking down the
pavillion steps to face his first ball - but to a webmaster it was deadly.
Which spelling is correct? and which could be used for the domain name?
I asked the social gents in the clubhouse. Bad
idea. An argument soon broke out; between the spelling of Staly and
Stayley (Staley was running a poor third). Fortunately, Billy Bird
(Stayley's Steward) passed
me the excellent book 'Over the Hill by Way of Highmoor' by Phil Taylor.
In this book, it was shown that Sta???y was a Founding Member of the Saddleworth
& District League, and The first minutes of the League were available at
Saddleworth Museum. I decided that the name used in those Founding Minutes should also become our web name.
Saddleworth Museum were most helpful. Whilst I couldn't view the record
for myself - (It's over 150 years old and buried in other excellent
documents of our industrial heritage), an archivist spent a couple of
weeks digging up the paperwork on my behalf. [This is a free service - use them
more! ]
The good news was that he found the article. In the Founding Minutes of the
Saddleworth and District league. the club was STAYLEY. The bad news
is that the archivist did a bit more digging and in Minutes later that year, the
same secretary used STALY and a few months after that: STALEY!
So, I've adopted first principle. 'Stayley' was used first and this is
our web address. If you happen to visit our clubhouse; you will see plenty of
versions or our club name - they are all correct!
